Where should you go to explore the authentic Venice? Castello! The truest area in Venice, off-the-beaten-path, that offers many local Restaurants as well as arts installations like the famous Biennale, and beautiful Monuments.
It is the eastern and the largest sestiere of Venice, if we want to see the island of Venice as the figure of a fish, Castello represents the tail.
From St. Mark's Square you just cross the Ponte della Paglia, from where you can admire the famous Bridge of Sighs, to find yourself in the Sestiere of Castello. From here you can start your walk, the area is still very touristy, but it will be easy to "get lost" among the "calli" ( the narrow streets) of Venice. While if you are in Cannaregio the connection of the two sestieri is the bridge of San Giovanni e Paolo. The Biennale and the Arsenal are also located in Castello.
