The Feast of Madonna della Salute recalls the terrible plague of the two-year period 1630-31, and the resulting vote by the Doge to obtain the Virgin's intercession.

Even nowadays thousands of Venetians and other faithful will be in procession -  on November 21 -  to pray in front of the main altar of the Church of Health - to perpetuate the secular bond of gratitude that binds the city to the Virgin Mary, is customary to bring a candle that is lit in church.

On November 21 the Basilica of the Madonna della Salute will remain open all day  continuously. Inside, masses are held every hour from 6.00 am to 10.00 pm without interruption. The solemn mass at 10:00 is presided over by the patriarch of Venice and at 10 pm celebrates la Compieta, or evening prayer.
The next day will be celebrated other masses from 10:00 to 16:00. At about 4.45 pm a musical tribute to the Madonna is usually held.
 

The typical dish for this party is the castradina, very tasty dish made from mutton.
